Baden Hall Fishery
1 / 5About
Doughnut is a circular canal-style match water built to the same specification as the Baden Hall canals, designed specifically for prolific match and pleasure fishing. The lake is 14 metres wide throughout its circular layout, with a clay bottom, sloped near and far banks descending to a flat silty clay base approximately 5 metres wide in the centre, and a maximum depth of 9 feet. With 22 pegs set across grass banks with stoned areas and parking in very close proximity, Doughnut is one of the most accessible and angler-friendly waters on the complex — ideal for those who want to focus on fishing without the need to lug tackle long distances to the bank. Pegs are allocated on a first come, first served basis, and the lake is very well stocked with a strong mix of match species providing excellent weights throughout the day. Bream reach 7lb, perch to 3.5lb, roach to 3lb, and hybrids are also present throughout the water. The circular design with its island centre creates a consistent far shelf target at pole distance all the way around the lake, making it perfectly suited to pole fishing and ensuring every peg offers a similar and fair fishing experience regardless of where you draw. Tactically, pole fishing to the far shelf is the most consistent and productive method on Doughnut, with waggler fishing also performing well across the open water. Cupping in small, regular pots of bait is the recommended approach rather than heavy feeding, keeping fish interested and active without overfeeding. Inside margin fishing on a float is also well worth exploring throughout the session, particularly later in the day when fish move into the near bank as activity increases. The sloped near and far banks create natural margin features that hold fish reliably. In terms of bait, the full range of traditional match baits produce well on Doughnut — maggot, worm, caster, corn, pellet, meat, paste and floaters all account for fish regularly. The fishery feeds its own pellets to the stock, so matching or complementing this with on-site purchased pellets can give an edge. Groundbait and micro pellet mixes work well when feeder fishing for the larger bream, while lighter, more precise presentations with maggots and casters tend to pick off the better roach and perch throughout the session. Doughnut is also the venue for Baden Hall's open match programme — contact the fishery to book onto upcoming fixtures.
