About

Mallards is a top-tier oval canal-style lake at Baden Hall Fishery, well established as a favourite among both pleasure anglers and match enthusiasts. Approximately 14 metres wide throughout its oval layout, the lake features a firm clay bottom with a double-shelf profile and sloping margins, a consistent average depth of 4 feet, and a steady inflow and outflow system that maintains excellent water quality throughout the year. With 23 generously spaced pegs set across grassed banks with new wooden platforms, the layout is ideal for both social sessions and competitive match fishing, providing comfortable, stable setups and hassle-free access all the way around. Mallards has recently been opened to night sessions, adding a new dimension to what was previously a day-only water and making it an even more attractive proposition for those seeking a peaceful overnight overnighter with consistent sport. The well-defined shelves and consistent width make it perfectly suited to pole or feeder work at all times of year, and the reliable depth means it remains a solid choice even in cooler conditions when shallower waters can become less productive. The current lake record stands at 18lb. The lake holds a well-balanced and healthy mix of species. Legacy strain carp reach 18lb, bream top 8lb, and quality roach, perch and hybrids are present throughout. The stock density ensures busy sessions and competitive match weights on a consistent basis, making it one of the most reliable match waters on the Baden Hall complex. Expect regular bites throughout the day regardless of conditions, with both silvers and carp responding well to a range of presentations. Tactically, pole fishing to the far shelf or down the inside line is the go-to approach, with small method feeders and pellet wagglers also scoring well, particularly on warmer days. The margins should never be overlooked — they are especially productive during evening and early morning periods on longer overnight sessions. Steady, light feeding throughout the session consistently outperforms heavy baiting on Mallards, keeping fish competing actively over the feed without pushing them out of the swim. Surface floaters can be highly effective in warmer weather when carp and larger silvers are active in the upper layers. Proven baits include natural offerings such as maggots, casters and worms alongside popular match staples including pellets, sweetcorn, meat and paste. The combination of accessible fishing, consistent sport, fair pegging and easy marshaling access makes Mallards an excellent venue for small club matches and open events. Night fishing is now available — book online or by phone.
