About

Makins Fishery stands as the UK's most prolific and popular commercial fishing complex, featuring over 600 swims across 18 meticulously maintained lakes spread over three distinct phases. Established over 30 years ago, this award-winning venue has built an exceptional reputation for consistently producing outstanding results for anglers of all abilities. The complex spans multiple phases, with the largest lake covering just under 5 acres and hosting 53 well-spaced pegs. The fishery is heavily stocked with carp ranging from 10-30lb, with an excellent population of 20lb+ specimens, plus quality bream averaging 3-5lb. The diverse lake system caters perfectly to both match and pleasure anglers, with matches held every Wednesday and Thursday throughout the season. Beyond exceptional fishing, Makins offers a complete angling experience with luxury lodge accommodations featuring private hot tubs, a well-stocked tackle shop, on-site cafe, and comprehensive camping facilities. The peaceful, scenic surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for memorable fishing sessions, with resident kingfishers adding to the natural charm. The fishery's commitment to fish welfare and environmental stewardship is evident in their strict catch-and-release policy and comprehensive rule structure. Skilled maintenance staff ensure pristine conditions year-round, while friendly, knowledgeable bailiffs are always on hand to assist visitors. Anglers regularly travel from across the UK to experience what many consider the gold standard of commercial fishery management.

Natural Lake

A 26 peg lake consistent of two banks- A and B both fish very similarly with depths averaging between 4-5 foot. TIPS: Feeding in the margins works wonders for the resident carp or across to the far bank, but dont be afraid to fish in the middle for our vast other specimens. Feeding micros or 4mm pellet with hard 6 or 8mm pellet on the hook is favourite along with bigger hookbaits like cubes of meat, corn and paste for the specimens. Maggots catch all year round

Natural Lake

Next to Lizard and separated by a long causeway, this 1 & 1/4 acre lake holding 38 pegs is the first lake you come to as you enter phase 2. It has a couple of small islands and fishing here is as good as anywhere. The versatility of this lake means its ideal for method, waggler and pole. Higher peg numbers narrow down making it ideal for any pole enthusiast. Lower peg numbers have the island to target.

Tactics & Tips

Traditional open end feeder tactics with worm, maggot or caster hookbaits work well when cast to gravel bars or fished down the inside margins for large carp. Sweetcorn, bread (winter only), and quality boilies fished over a bed of Makins own fishery pellets prove highly effective. Zig rigs fished mid-water can be deadly during warmer months. Single hookbait offerings and small PVA bags work exceptionally well in winter conditions. Method feeder fishing with groundbait and corn is consistently productive across all lakes.
